Manuel Antonio
The idea
Manuel Antonio is the shortest distance between rainforest and ocean in Costa Rica. That convenience is its gift and its problem: the wildlife is extraordinary, and so is everyone else's interest in it.
Park at opening, ocean and shade after, dinner above the cliff. Everything is within fifteen minutes.
Why go
- Reliable close wildlife without a difficult transfer — the best value in time of any destination here.
- Cliff-side views over the Pacific that few coastlines in the country can match.
- It works for three generations travelling together, which very few places do.
Best for
Not ideal forThis is the least private destination we work with. Park entry is regulated and busy, the main road is developed, and travellers seeking solitude should look south to Osa instead.
How long to stay
2
A glimpse
One park morning, one ocean afternoon.
3
Balanced
Adds mangroves or a boat day.
4
Immersive
Only if the coast is the point of the journey.
One of the easiest destinations to reach: a straightforward coastal drive from the Central Valley, or a short domestic flight.
Season by season
Green months are quieter and greener, and the wildlife does not leave. Peak weeks are the busiest of any destination in this collection.

Questions
- Is Manuel Antonio too touristic?
- It is the busiest place in this collection. Designed well — early entry, the right guide, the right side of the hill — it still delivers. Designed badly, it is a queue.
