Monteverde
The idea
Monteverde is a forest you hear before you see. At this altitude the cloud moves through the trees instead of above them, and everything — sound, temperature, colour — behaves differently from the coast you left this morning.
First light in the reserve, warm middle of the day, early nights. The forest gives most between six and nine in the morning.

- The most atmospheric forest in the country, and the best odds of serious birdlife with a good guide.
- Cool nights: the only chapter of a Costa Rica journey where you want a jacket.
- A working highland culture of coffee, cheese and conservation that predates tourism.
Best for
Not ideal forWind, mist and cool evenings are the point, not the exception — if you want guaranteed sun, this is the chapter to shorten. The approach roads are slow whichever way you come.
