The idea
Tortuguero has canals where other places have roads. You arrive by water, you move by water, and the wildlife comes to you rather than the other way round.
Two windows matter: sunrise and late afternoon on the water. The middle of the day belongs to the heat.
Why go
- A completely different way to travel: silent boats at first light instead of trails.
- Wildlife density along the waterways that rewards patience and a good local guide.
- A village with its own rhythm, reachable only by boat or small aircraft.

Not ideal forNot a beach or comfort chapter: the coast here is wild and not for swimming, humidity is high, and rooms are simple by design. Turtle nesting is seasonal and governed by conservation rules, never guaranteed.
