Two or three bases, ten nights or more, mornings for nature and afternoons for rest. Rain is a time of day here more often than a lost day, and the cloud forest is genuinely cool — most packing mistakes come from forgetting that.

- Start early. The best light and the most wildlife share the same hour.
- Pack a warm layer for the highlands, even in the driest months.
- Accept an afternoon of rain instead of chasing sun across the country.
- Keep one base for at least three nights.
