Getting around Costa Rica
Distances here are measured in hours and terrain, not kilometres.
A short line on a map can be a mountain pass, and a long one can be an easy coastal road. This is why we plan movement before places.
The short answer
In short
What is the best way to travel between destinations?
Private ground transfer for adjacent chapters, a domestic flight when the alternative is most of a day in a vehicle, and boat where there is no road — Tortuguero and parts of the south. The right answer depends on the pair of places, which is why our destination data carries a transfer complexity for each link.
The three modes
| Mode | Best for | What it costs you |
|---|---|---|
| Private road transfer | Adjacent places, scenery, flexibility | Time on winding roads |
| Domestic flight | Far chapters, the deep south | Luggage limits and fixed schedules |
| Boat | Places with no road | Weather sensitivity |
