How to plan a private trip to Costa Rica

The order of decisions matters more than the length of the list.

Private travel is not a more expensive version of the same trip. It is a different sequence of decisions, and the first one is never the hotel.

The short answer

In short

In what order should we plan?

Rhythm first (how many nights, how many moves), then character (which worlds you want), then places, then houses, then experiences. Choosing a hotel before a rhythm is how trips end up as transfer schedules.

The sequence

  • Decide the number of nights before the number of places.
  • Fix the travel window by character, not by a single 'best month'.
  • Choose two or three worlds — rainforest, coast, cloud forest — instead of all of them.
  • Let transfers dictate the order of places, not the other way round.
  • Leave at least one day with nothing scheduled.

Entry and formalities

Research pending

Entry requirements, insurance and any documentation rules — published only with an official government source, verified at the time of travel.

Editorial verdict

How far ahead should we plan?
The driest months and the festive weeks are the constrained ones. We plan around availability we can verify, and never quote availability we cannot.
